Training the Trainers
Ministry Training Centers (MTC) trains pastors and leaders how to establish exciting and effective Ministry Training Institutes (MTIs) at their home churches or ministries. MTC also trains leaders how to establish
Holy Spirit empowered small groups.
John and Sonja Decker are the primary instructors for the DWJD Workshops and Teacher Intensives and the Holy Spirit Empowered Small Group Workshops. They may also invite pastors, teachers, and evangelists (whom they have trained) to help facilitate the training.
It is the authors’ belief that Jesus’ strategy for training believers is the best model. He invested His life into a small group of “trainers” who turned the world upside down. Here is what MTC can do to help you establish a Ministry Training Institute:
How to start Holy Spirit Empowered Small Groups
“Jesus mentored twelve men in a small group and then turned His work over to them. The Holy Spirit Empowered Small Group Workshops set forth a biblical approach for Christian leaders to follow the Lord’s pattern in producing disciples that can change the world. The workshops demonstrate how to conduct a thirteen-week small group study that helps leaders follow a biblical pattern that is true to the Word of God. The workshop illustrates how to work with the Holy Spirit when He desires to be a part of Spirit-led worship, releasing spontaneous words that edify, exhort, and comfort, heal the sick, and/or set free those who are in bondage. The workshop also shows leaders how to deal with those that try to bring a style of ministry that may not be acceptable to the established protocol of senior leadership.
The workshop uses the book Holy Spirit Empowered Small Groups as a leader’s guide in facilitating a life-changing small group. Leaders need to experience the atmosphere that allows the Holy Spirit to freely manifest and bring spontaneous edification and healing to the people gathered. This workshop demonstrates and reveals how this can be done.
HSESG Workshop Costs
The Holy Spirit Empowered Small Group Workshops are normally conducted in a one-day format from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. If they are conducted in a church, it will be on a Saturday. The cost would be $25 per person with a minimum of 30 people attending. The book, which couples can share, is an additional $12.99. John and Sonja Decker, the authors of Holy Spirit Empowered Small Groups, conduct the workshops. The church also pays the Decker’s airfare and lodging.
If the workshops are conducted in Bend, Oregon, it will be from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on a Tuesday with participation in the Deckers’ home group in the evening from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person, plus $10.00 for a box lunch and $12.99 for the book. There is no minimum attendance. Attendees pay for their own airfare, lodging, and meals.
How to start a Ministry Training Institute
Pastors and teachers should experience the MTC mentoring dynamic that has made the Ministry Training Institutes so successful. This is achieved in the hands-on practicum sessions that are the heart of the training. This dynamic cannot be learned by reading a book. We have developed the fast-paced DWJD Workshop and Teacher Intensive combination so pastors and leaders can experience how to conduct the ministry skill sessions and teach from the Ambassador Series curriculum. Instructors learn how to personalize the teaching sessions for a high impact presentation. CDs are available to help teachers teach the lessons and bring personal illustrations and stories into the weekly curriculum.
The MTC Teacher Intensive
We cannot improve on Jesus’ strategy for training believers. He put His life into a small group of “trainers” who turned the world right side up. Here is how it is done:
- MTC will “train the trainers” in two venues:
- Regional Teacher Intensives hosted by any USA or Canadian church desiring to launch a Ministry Training Institute.
- Bend, Oregon Teacher Intensives hosted by Christ’s Ambassadors International at Westside Church, Bend, Oregon.
- These are open to any active leader involved in pastoring, teaching, evangelizing, or missionary work.
- The senior pastor of an established church must initiate the inquiry for hosting a Regional Teacher Intensive. The pastor must be open to inviting any other pastors or church leaders to participate that are within driving distance.
- Tentative dates, seminar location, and costs for hosting a Regional Teacher Intensive are negotiated and agreed upon with the host church.
- Once a final estimate of participating churches and attendees is confirmed, a firm date and training location are established.
Format and content:
Regional Teacher Intensives:
- Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon are dedicated to learning three of the six ministry skills in a DWJD Workshop format. All Christian leaders in the region can be invited to this part of the training.
- Saturday evening (or Sunday afternoon) is dedicated to the Teacher Intensive portion of the training. Teachers learn how to teach the Ambassador Series and how to implement the administrative tasks, including testing, ordering materials, and conducting a MTI graduation. Only pastors and teachers interested in launching a nine-month Ministry Training Institute (MTI) would be invited to this part of the training.
Bend, Oregon Teacher Intensives:
- Offered September, January and April
- This training is only for those pastors and teachers who are interested in launching a MTI in their local church
- Sunday evening and all day Monday and Monday evening are dedicated to learning the first three ministry skills and how to organize and teach the Ambassador Series.
- The pastors and teachers also learn how to implement the administrative tasks including testing, ordering materials, and conducting a MTI graduation.
- Monday evening is dedicated to participating in the three–hour, Bend, Oregon MTI in progress at Westside Church.
Regional Teacher Intensive and Workshop
Regional Teacher Intensive:
Workshop fee: (ten hours) The host church is responsible to pay Ministry Training Centers a workshop fee based on the number of leaders being trained. MTC recommends inviting other churches within a district or region to help share the workshop fee. Church may elect to charge a per person workshop fee to offset the total workshop fee.

Books: Attendees to the workshop must purchase a copy of Doing What Jesus Did. This book is the practicum guide for learning the ministry skills during the workshop. Books are purchased in advance at a quantity discount by the host church and distributed to each registered attendee. Couples may share a book. The attendee purchase price is $15.00 per book. The host church purchase price is:
Teacher Intensive: (three hours) This training is ONLY for pastors, instructors, and administrators desiring to launch a Ministry Training Institute in their church. There is no fee for this additional three hours of training. Each church desiring to launch a Ministry Training Institute or School of Ministry must purchase one or more copies of the Discipleship One training manuals for the Teacher Intensive. Discipleship Two and Three training manuals may be purchased if desired.
Travel Expenses:
The hosting church is responsible to reimburse John and Sonja Decker for airfare and lodging.
Bend, Oregon Teacher Intensive and Workshop:
Workshop fee: $65 per person.
The fee includes one Discipleship One training manual and one Doing What Jesus Did book. Couples may share a Doing What Jesus Did book for a total cost of $95 per couple. Each person pays for his or her own travel, lodging and meals.
The Bend Workshop and Teacher Intensive are conducted Sunday evening and all day Monday (ten hours). The training includes an additional three hours participating in the Ministry Training Institute at Westside Church in Bend, Oregon. Dates for the Bend Intensives are being scheduled three times each year in September, January, and April. Call (541) 593-7774 for dates and times, travel information, and lodging recommendations.
Regional DWJD Workshops ONLY:
- For churches not planning to launch a MTI but would like their leaders exposed to the ministry skills, they may host a DWJD Workshop only. This would be conducted Friday night through Saturday afternoon only.
- DWJD Workshop ONE: Leaders learn how to: 1) Lead people to Christ. 2) Lead Christians into the Holy Spirit Baptism. 3) Heal the Sick.
- DWJD Workshop TWO: Leaders learn how to: 1) Hear God’s Voice. 2) Heal the sick by revelation. 3) Deal with demons. (Workshop ONE is required before enrolling in Workshop TWO).
- Friday night, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon are dedicated to conducting a DWJD Workshop.
- DWJD Workshop only Costs:

Where to Start
Set the Date to Host a Teacher Intensive:
- Contact Ministry Training Centers and schedule a weekend that will work for conducting a combination Workshop and Teacher Intensive.

- Dates are currently being established six months in advance.
- MTC will send a packet on how to best prepare for hosting a Workshop and Teacher Intensive.
To Register for the Bend, Oregon Teacher Intensive and Workshop:
- We schedule the Bend, Oregon Intensives three times per year: September January, and April. (Please call for the current schedule.)
- The MTC offices will mail or email an application to any pastor or teacher desiring to launch a MTI in their church.
- The deadline for registering for a Bend, Oregon Teacher Intensive is two weeks prior to the start of the intensive.
- Call 541 593 7774 or email: decker@bendbroadband.com to confirm the dates of the intensive and to reserve seats.
- There is no minimum attendee requirement. The intensives are intimate and geared to giving personal attention to pastors and teachers to make sure they launch an exciting and long-lasting MTI.
