Junior and Senior High Youth Love “Grandma” Sonja

Bend, OR—Steve Stern, pastor of Youth Development at Westside Church, invited Sonja to speak to the Junior High service and the Senior High service February 18. She started by, “Everyone say this, “Grandma Sonja is radical, but she is not weird.” The essence of this opening was to prepare the young people for a radical message about God’s intention of redeeming us from worthless pursuits to greatness in Him.
She spoke about the story of the prophet Hosea and how the Lord instructed him to marry a prostitute and when she left and was unfaithful to go buy her back from the slave market. God did this to make a bold object lesson for the unfaithful nation of Israel. They were just like unfaithful Gomer. God’s great love for us, even when we are unfaithful is remarkable. Sonja challenged the youth to sell out to Jesus Christ and allow God to redeem them no matter how mixed up their lives have been. The senior high youth responded with a strong rededication to Jesus.
